Stoves
Woodburning & Solid Fuel Stoves
Are you thinking about investing in a stove for your home? Whilst adding value to your home it is also a great way to heat your house. Wood and multifuel stoves not only look beautiful they offer many benefits.
With the rising prices of gas and electricity bills, stoves are an amazing alternative. Stoves can cut
your energy bills by around 25%! Stoves are a sustainable form of energy when used and installed correctly whilst also being a low carbon alternative to using fossil fuels.

Despite what the media may spread, stoves are much kinder to the environment than using gas and
electric. Burning wood also means it’s a renewable fuel source so its much better for the environment.

Whilst having many benefits for the environment and increasing value to your house, what other
good affects does a stove have?
Stoves have been scientifically proven to lift your mood and lower blood pressure. This is because they have a calming affect and are used as a form of relaxation by many people. Does anything sound better than getting in from a hard day at work, its freezing cold and raining, you arrive home light the stove and sit on the couch with a beer or glass of wine and watch the dancing flames flicker, your feet up and only the sound of the roaring flames to be heard.
Absolutely bliss! Many people end up watching the fire more than the TV!
DEFRA 2022
If you have been researching about stoves you may have also come across the term DEFRA 2022. When a stove is DEFRA smoke exempt it means the stove has been passed and tested in alliance with the UK government department of environment criteria for emission levels and the amount of smoke that will be allowed to be always produced. DEFRA stoves have been carefully modified by manufacturers to limit the amount the stove can be closed down (starved of air). When a stove is starved of air, this results in a smoky combustion, which is very bad for the environment.
A DEFRA approved stove will therefore always provide the minimum level of combustion air so that the wood burns efficiently without producing unnecessary smoke this is to ensure that the appliance complies with the clean air act. This means that you CAN legally burn wood in a UK smoke control area- which is most of the cities and large town within the UK.
What coal/wood can I burn?
Ready to burn legislation came into force in England on 1 May 2021. The new law bans the sale of most polluting fuels used in homes, such as wet wood and house coal. Ready to burn wood will have a moisture content of less than 20%. In turn this helps to reduce pollution and improve air quality. House coal and wet wood should not be burnt. It is bad for the environment, your stove and your flue liner.
